Inspirational Women of Virginia
Influential Women who Helped Shape this Great Commonwealth
We know from history class that there was a special relationship between Pocahontas and the Pilgrim, John Smith, but the power of her position is not always well understood. The English knew Pocahontas as the favorite daughter of the great Chief Powhatan, and while that made her an important person, her ability to broker peace made her an important ally to the English. On one occasion, she negotiated the release of several prisoners held by Powhatan. According to John Smith, it was for and to Pocahontas alone that the Chief finally released them. Over time however, relations between the Powhatan Indians and the English began to deteriorate, but Pocahontas maintained her relationship with the newcomers.
Her bravery not only saved John Smith’s life, but many of the Englishmen who were at odds with the Native Powhatan tribes. Despite the difficulties of navigating those relationships and maintaining the respect from all sides, Pocahontas acted as a peacemaker and a clear head through the turmoil. She is one of Virginia’s most influential women.
