Inspirational Women of Virginia
Influential Women who Helped Shape this Great Commonwealth
Virginia Dare was the first English person born in the New World, and this is remarkably the only certain fact we know about the girl. Dare really is a one-time, cameo appearance in the time, and the mystery about her and the other Lost Colony of English Settlers is one of the most unusual stories in Virginia’s history.
Somehow, the mystery of her existence has become inextricably tied to various movements, some dark and unfortunate, some bright and brilliant. We do know that for the last 400 years since her birth, her name has served as a rally cry for both those who have opposed and for those who support women’s voting rights. She is a symbol to many representing equal rights to women, and during this Centennial Anniversary of the Nineteenth Amendment, she is one of Virginia’s first and most influential women.
