Cockacoeskie

Inspirational Women of Virginia

Influential Women who Helped Shape this Great Commonwealth

Cockacoeskie

She rose to her position in a strange, turbulent time for English Settlers during which they allied themselves with the Pamunkey to fend off hostile native tribes, and it was the English who bestowed the name Pamunkey Queen upon her after her husband was killed defending the settlers’ fort. Cockacoeskie was quickly respected for her leadership qualities and her ability to unite several warring regional tribes, which she ruled over as Chieftain for 30 years. A peace-maker and naturally skilled in trade, she became a trusted and valued resource to all people in this region of Virginia.  Cockacoeskie was known as the woman who eased tensions and brought enduring peace, which makes her one of Virginia’s most influential women.
